Target Groups and Requirements
The Summer Sessions, offering a wide spectrum of different courses, from introductory to advanced university courses, are offered to international students from basically every education background- from high school students to graduates to working professionals. In addition, international students are encouraged to participate in offered university English language courses.
Besides high school graduates and, of course, German university and professional education students, German upper level students (Schüler) also have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Sessions at some universities, taken into account that they possess a good command of English. These student’s English language skills, will definitely improve through the courses. Moreover, they will acquire all of their student performance grade reports, which will be of great importance to any later college study, provided that the appropriate courses of study are elected.
Due to the large selection of offered specialized courses, the Summer Sessions are an ideal option for those, including professionals, wishing to receive continuing education. At an American university, the Summer Session conditions of admission are different from those imposed during the rest of the academic year. This is possible through a university “open enrolment policy.”
This means that each applicant who fulfils the few basic conditions may participate in the Summer Sessions. Usually belonging to these basic conditions, is a certain minimum age (usually 18, in some cases- 15 or 16 years of age in other.) For German students, “Abitur” or “Fachabitur,” and in some cases, a “Oberstufenschüler” level is enough to fulfil the minimum education requirement, provided that they posses a good command of English. Grade or performance reports, including a letter of motivation, as is required to undertake a Bachelor or Master Study program, is not required.
Thus, the Summer Sessions an excellent opportunity to receive high-quality academic instruction, as well as a chance to experience campus-life at an American university. Applicants to the universities for a semester abroad, or for a regular academic time of study during any other time of the year, have to compete against each other, making the chances of study challenging and sometimes not possible.
Summer Session participants are usually divided into three large groups:

| - |
Native students, studying at the university, wishing to study additionally during the remaining time of the year, and who wish to use the summer in order to accelerate their study or make up courses, which are pertinent to their study programs |
| - |
Native students, studying at other institutions, wishing to study at other North American universities or smaller colleges, who want to take the opportunity to take summer courses at an elite university, for example the UC Berkeley |
| - |
International students (high school graduates or upper level students) wishing to spend the summer in North America to study and after, return to their home countries. |
