Location of the University of California Berkeley
UC Berkeley's campus is the oldest one within the University of California system, which is a system of state universities spread over 10 locations. It lies on the eastern banks of San Francisco Bay and is one of the most beautiful campuses in the country because of its rural charm which fortunately could be preserved. There are many administrative and academic buildings located on 72 hectares, and east of the main campus you can find numerous research facilities like the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Hall of Science and Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. Strawberry Creek crosses the whole area, and there are a lot of beautiful landmarks on campus like the Sproul Plaza, Eucalyptus Grove, and Campanile Esplanade. The most important symbol of architecture is the Charles Franklin Doe Memorial Library, which was designed by John Galen Howard in 1917. Further historic buildings include the Faculty Club from 1902, Giannini Hall from 1930, and Wheeler Hall from 1917.
